This pine cone animal craft (we always called them pine cone pets!) was one of the very first activities I did with my daughters when they were little โ and they absolutely loved it. Not just making themโฆ but playing with them for hours afterwards. Some looked a bit like lions with fluffy manes, others had tiny ears like mice, and a few ended up as slightly wild-looking monsters!
And thatโs exactly the point.
Thereโs no right or wrong way to make them โ just simple, creative fun that grows out of your childโs imagination.
All you really need is a pine cone and a few scraps of feltโฆ and youโve got a craft you can do anywhere.
They’re super easy to make, great fun to play with and each one will always be unique and individual. The perfect pet that comes straight from your child’s imagination into their hand.

Materials Required To Make Your Pine Cone Animals
You can keep this craft incredibly simple.
The basics:
- Pine cones (any size)
- Felt scraps
Optional extras:
- Googly eyes
- Glue stick or glue gun
- Pom poms
The felt can simply be tucked into the pine cone, so you donโt even need glue if you want to keep things really easy.
How To Make Pine Cone Animals
Add Eyes (Optional but Fun!)
If youโd like to bring your creatures to life, start by adding googly eyes.
You can place them anywhere โ close together, far apart, wonky or oversized โ it all adds to their character.

Cut and Shape Your Felt
Cut small pieces of felt to create:
- Ears
- Tails
- Wings
- Manes
Children can draw their own shapes first or just experiment as they go.

Felt works best as it’s easier to bend into shape and position into the pine cones. But foam is a good fallback if you don’t have any felt scraps (or other material) lying around. It just gives a more rigid shape to the finished pine cone animal.
Build Your Creature
Push the felt pieces into the natural gaps in the pine cone.

You can use:
- Fingers for larger gaps
- A cocktail stick or plastic needle for smaller spaces
Then just keep adding and adjusting until your creature takes shape.

Easy Pine Cone Animal Ideas for Kids
If your child isnโt sure what to make first, try starting with a simple animal shape.
A few easy ideas include:
- a mouse with round ears
- or a small creature made from just eyes and one or two felt pieces for decoration
Once they get going, children quickly begin creating their own versions โ changing shapes, colours and features as they play.
You can:
- Make animals
- Create monsters
- Turn them into tiny trees
- Build whole little worlds
Every single one will be different โ and thatโs what makes them so much fun.

Take It Outdoors or Use It for Open-Ended Play at Home
This is what makes this craft really special.
Itโs not just something to sit down and โcompleteโ โ it can become an open-ended play activity.
You can:
- Collect pine cones while you’re out on a walk
- Bring them home and create together
- Or take a small bag of felt pieces with you and make them on the go
Keep it as simple as you like:
- Just pine cones + felt works perfectly
- Add googly eyes or glue if you want
It turns a simple walk into a creative adventure.
