I’m a big fan of the BrainBox series (we already have quite a few) and as a family we love our myths and monster. So when the new BrainBox Myths & Monsters was delivered by our postman there was a fair bit of excitement from everyone.
What’s Inside BrainBox Myths & Monsters
Inside the box you get …
55 cards
1 rules card
1 x 10 second sand timer
1 x 8 sided die (an octahedron incase you wanted to know)
The box has a flip over lid that closes with an invisible, internal magnetic clasp. It’s strong and robust and can be used to rest the cards in when playing as well as for storing the game pieces. The cards them selves are nice and thick making them easy to pick up and hold in the hand without bending. 70% of the game is made from recycled materials
Each card has a beautifully detailed illustration of an historical myth & legend from around the world. The illustration details a scene from the myth & legend along with a title, where the in the world the tales came from with a small amount of textural information.
How Do You Play BrainBox Myths & Monsters
The concept of the game is brilliantly clever and subtle. Aimed at 8+ year olds, the game is designed to get you and your children to explore myths and monsters from around the world using your observational and memory skills. No prior knowledge is required.
Each player takes it in turn to pick a card and study the illustration for 10 seconds using the sand timer (you can choose to allow a player to have double the time depending on their needs). When the timer runs out the card is placed face down onto the table and the player rolls the dice. the number on the dice is used to pick the question the player must answer about the illustration … as mentioned before it’s all about memory and observational skills.
If you answer the question correctly you keep the card.
If you answer incorrectly it goes back in the pile.
The winner is the person who gets the greatest pile of cards over 10 minutes … and that’s the genius part of the game. It only lasts 10 minutes!
Actually it often lasts longer… well it does in this house. My girls love it so much they double the time allowed for play and when the game has finished there is normally a flurry of activity on google ,as they look up a few of their favourite myths and monsters from the game. And that’s the beauty of the game. It’s really easy to tweak it to suit your kids ability … allow longer timer time, lengthen or shorten the game play time, add other BrainBox game cards into the mix. And of course the more it’s played the more facts and detail they remember so without even realising it, your children start to learn a little bit about the myths and Monsters of other cultures that can also feed into it’s ancient history. I love the BrainBox series and the myths and monsters set is a brilliant new addition. It is top heavy with Ancient Greek myths and monsters (they form 28 of the cards) but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the game and generated a great list of movies we could watch to find out more! Other tales come from Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Russian, Anglo-Saxon, Scottish, Irish, West African, English, German, Roman, Norse, Jewish and Aztec culture … there’s even a Cornish myth and legend included! This sounds like a fabulous game to get. Great for my older children, I’m sure they will thoroughly enjoy and as its educational a bonus
The Lochness Monster, I love the fact no-one knows for sure he is not real, I’d love to go to Scotland to look for Nessie haha 🙂
We take Brain boxes on holiday with us…they are so transportable and fun to use when waiting for a plane or sitting in a restaurant as they don’t take up much space. I think my daughters would enjoy the Myths and Monsters questions

Brainbox seems like a great way to boost memory and also learn great observational skills. This edition looks to be great fun as most children really enjoy myths and monsters and would be interested in the facts contained here x
The unicorn is my favourite mythical creature – they fascinated me as a child and still do now! I also like to be scared by the Minotaur when I was little – it freaked me out!
I’m a dragon fan. Always have been since I read the Hobbit as a kid!
Mine has to be a fairy especially the tooth fairy I couldn’t wait to pull a loose tooth out to find money under my pillow which was a bonus but just the thought of a fairy being under my pillow was exciting
Not a kid anymore but love board games. Think it stems from being an only child and wanting to play them a lot, but couldn’t as mum would often be busy so had to rely on seeing grandparents etc…anyway it seems fun and chance to learn about myths and monsters! x

We’ve got this game but it’s for ‘The World’ – its really educational and the kids love it.
We love BrainBox games, like you say they’re really easy to tweak to suit the children playing. They make great birthday presents for their friends too.

The Phoenix, its a beautiful mythical creature and I love it. So much so I named my daughter Phoenix.
Medusa and the Gorgons is my favourite! It always fascinated me as a child – snakes as hair and eyes that could turn things to stone!

The Loch Ness Monster. Have visited Inverness, Loch Ness and had boat trip with friends. Lovely weekend in Inverness with Boyfriend and his family. Weather was Beautiful. Will always remember it, as it was a time we were all together, having a nice Peaceful, Relaxing time. It was a treat organised by Boyfriend’s Brother who was terminally ill with cancer at the time. He wanted to spend some quality time with those he loved.
I have since then also had a neighbour called “Nessie”. Her formal name being Agnes.

My favourite is the Loch Ness Monster 🙂 because I love the idea there is a giant serpent lurking in Loch Ness, and if there isn’t it fascinates me as to what people have actually seen!
My favourite is the Snow Maiden. She was bought to life to bring an old couple happiness, but could only survive in cold weather. It’s a story of experiencing love if only for a brief time and also theirs nothing like being human

I loved the myth of the Hydra as a kid. Seven heads & if you cut one off, another 2 would grow in it’s place. With poisonous breath & blood, I was amazed that anyone would challenge it!

Trolls in Norway. I recently went to the Norweigan Fiojds and the stories and images of Trolls are everywhere telling tourists about the ogre’s, which are hidden deep in the forests and mountains. I was fascinated and freely admit, that I was regularly looking through my binoculars hoping for a glimpse of the mystical. It’s so beautiful and dense up there; who knows, who knows!!!!!

Mythical creature has to be a fairy, my daughter loves them and each time the tooth fairy is due to visit we make it all magical to get her imagination going. The monster has to be the Loch Ness Monster, I am from Scotland, I remember myself and everyone at school being absolutely fascinated and I still am!
