Pet Parasites: How to Protect Your Dog and Keep Your Family Safe

Summer is the perfect time for outdoor adventures with your dog—but it’s also peak season for pet parasites in dogs. Whether you’re hiking through fields, enjoying picnics in the park, or just spending more time in the garden, parasites are more active than ever—and they often go unnoticed until they cause serious issues.

So how do you enjoy summer safely with your four-legged friend? By learning about the pet parasites in dogs that could affect your pet—and your family—and knowing how to prevent them.

Understanding Pet Parasites in Dogs

From hidden worms to blood-sucking ticks, pet parasites in dogs come in many forms. Some are external, like fleas and ticks, while others—like lungworm and roundworm—live inside your pet and can be harder to spot.

The biggest concern? Many parasites can be harmful not just to your dog but also to humans, especially children. Parasites can transfer through close contact, contaminated soil, or even just being out on a walk.

The Benefits of Dog Ownership (and Why That Makes Parasite Prevention So Important)

Dogs offer us so much—companionship, loyalty, and a great excuse to get outside and stay active. They help reduce stress, encourage routine, and often become much-loved members of the family. If you’re still unsure just how much a pet can positively impact your household, this post about the top ways a pet can benefit your family is a lovely reminder.

But because our dogs are so closely integrated into our daily lives—joining us on walks, cuddling on the sofa, playing with the kids—it’s even more important to protect them (and us) from harmful parasites.

Common Pet Parasites in Dogs You Should Know About

Here are three common types of pet parasites in dogs that every pet owner should be aware of:

Lungworm

Lungworm is one of the most dangerous internal parasites in dogs. It’s picked up from slugs, snails, or even puddles, and it can cause serious illness or even death in dogs. It doesn’t affect humans, but it’s still vital to treat it regularly.

Ticks

Ticks are external parasites in dogs that can cause health issues for both dogs and people. They can carry Lyme disease, which is dangerous for humans, and other illnesses that may severely impact your dog’s health.

Roundworm

Often underestimated, roundworms are a hidden risk. These internal parasites can be passed to humans and have the potential to cause neurological problems or even blindness—especially in children.

How to Prevent Pet Parasites in Dogs

The good news is that pet parasites in dogs are preventable with regular treatments. Modern options include easy-to-administer oral chews that protect against multiple parasites without interrupting your usual doggy cuddles.

Speak with your vet about a treatment plan that covers internal and external parasites, and make sure it’s maintained all year—not just during summer.

Taking Your Dog on Outdoor Adventures?

If you’re planning a summer trip with your furry friend, make sure parasite protection is on your checklist—especially if you’ll be spending time in grassy fields, woods, or campsites. Puppies and young dogs are particularly vulnerable during their first big adventures. Not sure what to pack or prepare? Here’s a helpful guide to camping with a puppy that covers all the essentials for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Turn Pet Care Into a Learning Opportunity

If you’re homeschooling or just want your kids to better understand how to care for pets, talking about parasites as part of pet health is important.

Check out these fantastic pet-related teaching resources from The Homeschool Scientist. They include creative ways to explore pet biology, responsible ownership, and how to keep both pets and people healthy.

Keep Your Whole Family Safe

Our dogs are part of the family—and protecting them from parasites is part of being a responsible owner. With a little awareness and the right treatment, you can enjoy a safe, happy, parasite-free summer together.

So next time you’re out for a walk or playing in the garden, take a moment to ask yourself: Is my dog protected from pet parasites?

I don’t have any pets but the wife was talking about getting a dog sometime in the future. Not being an experienced pet owner this information will come in handy!

Thank you for this – such an informative read! My parents are the ones who deal with our dogs as we live at home, but know they’ve read up quite a bit and always check with the vets on what we can do.

I actually have no clue about this stuff! I let my boyfriend or dad sort it out for our dog. I really should look into this more as I didn’t realise it was so common. Thanks for the advice and info.

This was a very informative post. I don’t own any pets at my place but know many people who do! My sister owns a cat and so do my neighbours.

We only do flea and tick, and wormer for our cat with a spot on treatment. It’s scary that they can get so many parasites.

I don’t have any pets, but the thought of any getting parasites is just so sad. They’re like part of the family, aren’t they? You don’t want anything like this to happen to them 🙁
