Why Use a Microwave Flower Press?

I remember the excitement of pressing flowers as a child … I also remember how long it took! We would

  • pick our flowers and then lay them carefully between some blotting paper.
  • Place the blotting paper between some newspapers.
  • Put the newspaper inside a book.
  • Collect as many of the heavy encyclopedia-style books we had and stack them on top of the book that contained our precious flowers
  • And wait … for quite a few weeks.

I can’t imagine my girls having that kind of patience! Luckily, modern technology has changed the game—with the Instant Flower Press by My Living World, flowers dry in a matter of seconds, not weeks!

How To Use The Instant Flower Press

  1. Assemble the Press: First place two felt sheets and one cotton sheet onto either side of the plastic press. And secure both sides together with a plastic pin.
How to use a flower press
  1. Place The Flowers: Carefully lay your flower(s) on top of one cotton sheet.
  2. Secure the Press – Close the press and secure in place with the plastic pins.
  3. Microwave with Water – Place the press in the microwave with a half-filled cup of cold water (this prevents the flower burning).
  4. Now place the press in the microwave with a half-filled cup of cold water (this is important as it stops the flower from burning).
  5. Heat for 20 Seconds – Check the flower. If still damp, let it cool and repeat until fully dry.

Tip: Depending on the type of flower you have you may need to repeat this a few more times. You must let everything cool down and dry out between heating and there will be some colour bleed from your flowers onto the cotton sheet.

What Flowers Can You Press?

Best Flowers for Pressing:

  • Flowers with flat petals (pansies, daisies, violets)
  • Thin, delicate flowers without dense centers that naturally lie flat

Tricky Flowers:

  • Thick flowers (like roses or gerbera daisies) take longer and may need extra drying time.

I tested it with Germini flowers (similar to daisies but thicker). The petals dried beautifully, but the center took longer—I had to dry it over a radiator to finish the process.

I only had thick Germini flowers to use. I lay the flower face down and carefully pushed over the other side of the flower press pushing down on the flower as I did. If you look at the above photo you can see a slight bend in the press.

After the first 20-second blast in the microwave the press dropped and became flat, like below.

Although the flower had dropped it was still quite moist so a put it in another couple of times. The centre was the hardest to completely dry out because it’s so dense and I burnt the edges of the petals slightly. But I was still very impressed with the outcome.

I did need to give them a final drying out over the radiator. But that was just because the centre of the flower was so thick and putting it back in the microwave would have burnt the ends more. I also kept the flowers in the press and layered them between paper to stop the flowers curling.

A rummage in the garden produced some smaller less dense flowers and they worked perfectly.

Top Tips for Perfectly Pressed Flowers

Experiment! Every flower is unique, so you may need to adjust drying times.

  • Let flowers cool before handling—they can be hot straight from the microwave and moisture trapped in the center is still evaporating.
  • If the press feels damp, the flowers need another round in the microwave.
  • Flip the felt sheets between sessions (like rotating a mattress) to get even pressing.
  • Try different microwave power settings (low, medium, high) for larger flowers.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Yes! If you love flower pressing but hate waiting weeks, this is a fantastic tool.

Pros:

  • Dries flowers in seconds
  • Retains beautiful colors
  • Great for kids and craft projects
  • Easy to use and mess-free

Cons:

  • Works best on flat flowers (thicker blooms take extra effort)
  • Some color bleed onto the cotton sheet (but doesn’t affect the flower)

If you want to press flowers quickly for crafting, scrapbooking, or decoration, this microwave flower press is a must-have.

The idea is really nice and quick!
However, there is a certain sentiment about pressing flowers between the pages of a book though…

Amazon do them. I didn’t put any links on this post (I’ll rectify) but if you go to the review link in amongst the text at the top of the page you’ll find some links on that page with details on how to use the press
