Frozen Ice Ball Play: How to Make a Magical Ice Cave

It all started when I found an idea on Pinterest to make colorful frozen ice balls for my kids to play with. I couldn’t resist giving it a try, so I filled some balloons with water and food coloring and popped them into the freezer, thinking they’d make a fun activity for my girls. Excited and a bit impatient, I checked on them early—and to my surprise, while I was peeling away the balloon on one of them, I stumbled upon something even better—an incredible Ice Cave!

The partially frozen ice cracked under the weight of the water still inside. And as the water poured out it left a hollow dome, which quickly became a magical centerpiece for imaginative play.

Here’s how you can create your own ice caves and bring a bit of frosty fun into your day.

 What You’ll Need for Frozen Ice Ball Play

To create your own ice caves, gather these simple materials:

• A freezer (or take advantage of cold outdoor weather)
• Balloons
• Water
• Liquid food coloring (avoid paste coloring—it won’t mix well)

How To Make An Ice Cave

1. Add the Color (optional): Start by adding about 0.5–1 teaspoon of liquid food coloring into a balloon. The amount depends on the size of the balloon and how vibrant you want the color to be.
2. Fill with Water: Carefully fill the balloon with water, tie it securely, and give it a gentle shake to spread the coloring. Don’t shake if you would prefer a block of colour at the base.

3. Freeze: Place the balloon in the freezer and leave it for around 5–6 hours. Check periodically to see if the outer layer has frozen solid whilst still having an unfrozen water center. The exact freezing time will vary depending on the size of your balloon, so adjust as needed.

4. Peel and Reveal: Over a sink, carefully peel the balloon away. Pressure from the remaining water inside should cause a natural hole or crack in the ice. If this doesn’t happen gently breaksome of the ice using a tool such as a screw driver. This will creates a perfect opening to look inside—or to place small toys!

5. Marvel at the Colors: If you didn’t stir your food colouring it should hopefully sink to the bottom of the balloon (because it’s denser), resulting in a vibrant tinted base to your finished ice cave.
