Tasty Recipes Using Bread That Aren’t Sandwiches

The bag of sliced bread is a staple in most larders but how often are you using bread for more than just a sandwich? Some of my favourite tasty, quick, and useful meal ideas recipes using bread that don’t include making it into sandwiches and I’ve listed a few below.

This is a collaborative post with Hovis but all thoughts are my own.

Bread is actually very versatile and with a little creative thought can form the basis for some tasty quick prep meal ideas. Here are a few of my favourite alternative uses.

If you like this then you may also like my easy duck wrap, chicken veg rice car supper, sweet chilli coconut prawns and spicy roast tomato soup.

Hovis Best Of Both Thick Bread

Hovis Best of Both thick bread is perfect for using to make quick light lunches and snacks. It’s mix of specially white and wholemeal flour makes this tasty loaf truly is the best of both! And the loaf contains essential calcium for strong teeth and bones, is rich in Vitamin D to help support your immune system and is a source of fibre.

Hovis Best Of Both Worlds Bread Use Ideas That Are Not A Sandwich

It’s soft texture and thickness is perfect for shaping and and absorbing other flavours.

Eggy Bread, Bacon & Maple Syrup

Bread and egg is a match made in heaven. The texture and flavours work together really well to create a tasty light lunch. And Eggy Bread is one of my favourite alternatives to a sandwich as you can use it as the basis for so many light meals.

I prefer to use thick-sliced bread, as it helps the bread hold together when it’s being transferred to the frying pan full of eggy goodness. Thinner cuts can start to tear under the weight of the egg mixture. Plus you get a nice thick fluffy mouthful with thick-sliced bread.

How To Make Eggy Bread

As a family of meat eaters and vegetarians, it’s easy to knock this up for everyone using smokey bacon for the meat eaters and veggie bacon for the veggies.

It’s looks beautiful dished out and is a filling, easy quick brunch/light lunch to fix for friends.

Summer Pudding

Summer Pudding is a fantastic dessert to make with sliced bread and Hovis Best of Both not only gives a nice texture but also adds a complementary flavour to the pudding. It’s tasty, filling, and also a very thrifty dessert. I prefer using thick-cut as it holds more juice and I also like to use frozen fruit as it’s easier, cheaper and more convenient than using fresh fruit.

Using Bread To Make Mini Summer Puddings

You can either make one large pudding or make it look cuter when served by making individual mini Summer Puddings, which is my preferred way. I serve it with either ice-cream or cream. Delicious!

Using Bread To Make Breadcrumbs

Finally, breadcrumbs! Breadcrumbs are so under-rated and under-used. Plus making your own is so easy!

I always put the crusts into the blender if I’ve cut them off a slice of bread (such as when making Summer Pudding).

Home Made Bread Crumbs

Hovis Best Of Both thick cut makes really flavoursome breadcrumbs that you can add to soup and pies as a thickener, use to coat meat and vegetables for frying like in this Katsu Curry.

But one of my favourite things to do is to toast them off in a frying pan with herbs and garlic to use as garnishes on the top of soups, cottage pies and pasta bakes?
