Today was the kind of day that made you want to stay at home and put the heating on. Picturesque grey skies, wonderfully chilly wind and rain that couldn’t quite make its mind up, all pointed to a day of indoor fun!
So imagine the joy I felt when I checked the school’s website to see in bold colouful letters that – ‘Sports Day Was Going Ahead’!
‘Oh, please! You’re having a laugh?’, I thought. But as much as I kept checking the website, it didn’t change so at 10.30am I dutifully entered the school playground with Mr Dad, Aneira, Rowan and the rest of the school’s parents and grandparents.
There we stood, wrapped up in warm jackets and coats watching our children who were dressed in shorts and T-shirts (a few had cardigans). They laughed, chanted and cheered their team mates on, seemingly oblivious to the chill that was turning some of them a tinge of blue. That alone making them medal winners in my eyes.
It was comforting to see that the old style skills taught when I was at school were still just as relevant today (skipping, quoit balancing, egg and spoon, hopping etc). Although the rocket launching took me by surprise!
I must give some credit to my twins who weren’t too disruptive, if you ignore RaRa trying to poke her eye out with a stick. I blame it on her cold hands that she refused to take out of her mittens, even in the face of some crisps. Luckily RoRo was more than happy to oblige!
God, I could’ve killed for a coffee! (Note to self: Suggest to PTA for next year )
