Materials Youโ€™ll Need for 3D Paper Snowflakes

Start by gathering your materials, Most of which you’ll probably already have.

  • Snowflake Paper Punch: Don’t use less than a 1.5″ width snowflake punch if you are hanging them in a window or tree. smaller 3d Paper snowflaves make gorgeous table scatter decorations.
  • Cardstock or Paper: I used printer paper to create classic white snowflakes, and blue-spotted card stock for others. But you can have fun with any coloured paper that suits your required aesthetic. I used Papermania Spots & Stripes Brights card stock that I don’t think you can buy anymore but this cardstock is very similar.
  • GlueStick: A glue stick is recommended to avoid the paper and card getting too wet and warping; if using PVA glue, apply it very sparingly.
  • White Cotton Thread: For hanging the snowflakes.
  • Paper Folding Tool or Ruler (Optional): While not necessary, a paper folding tool or ruler can help make crisp folds if needed. I find folding by hand and using the back of my nail works just as well.

How To Make 3D Paper Snowflakes

Each individual snowflake decoration, will need to have either 3 or 5 snowflake shapes dpending on what type of snowflake you want. I like to have a mix of both the 3 and 5 piece decorations.

Hole Punched Paper Snowflakes

If you’ve got younger kids helping you with this you can ask them to do some simple maths and work out how many snowflake shapes they need in total.

Once you have your snowflakes, gently fold each one down the center. This gives them a 3D effect and makes it easier to glue them together. Make sure the bend DOES NOT go the snowflake tips.

Creasing Paper Snowflakes

Apply a thin layer of glue to one half of a folded snowflake, then carefully press a matching half onto it. Continue this process, making sure each layer is perfectly aligned to create a symmetrical snowflake.

Making A DIY Paper Snowflake

Before securing the last snowflake halves together glue a looped piece of thread down the center of the paper snowflake. Once this is in place, glue the remaining halves together. Now your snowflake is ready to hang! This small step makes a big difference and gives your snowflake a polished, finished look.

They also look gorgeous used as table and mantle decorations.

Ideas for Using Your 3D Snowflakes

These beautiful decorations arenโ€™t limited to just hanging on your Christmas tree. Here are a few ideas to make the most of your 3D snowflakes:

Window Display

Hang your snowflakes in windows using invisible thread or fishing line. Vary the sizes and hang them at different heights for pretty snowy effect.

Festive Table Centerpiece

Scatter a few snowflakes around candles or vases filled with winter greenery to create a seasonal table centerpiece. You can also arrange them in a bowl or along the length of a table runner for an eye-catching display.

Gift Toppers

The 3D paper snowflakes look really cute attatched to presents, but make sure to use card stock or thicker paper as the printer paper snowflakes are more delicate.

Mantel Decoration

Add snowflakes to your mantel for a wintery, festive vibe. And add fairy lights around them to create a soft, cozy glow.

Paper Snowflake Tutorial

Snowflake Garland

String multiple 3D paper snowflakes together to make a unique holiday garland. Hang it along stair rails, across doorways, or above windows.
