There have been loads of wonderful Yarn Bombing images on the internet and in the news. Every one seems to be getting involved. Last year the WI (Womens Institute) in the town my girls got to school decked out a local pub in wonderful crocheted knits they had created for an arts trail.
Time to get the kids involved and what better way to do it than to use finger knitting.
Finger knitting is a great way to introduce kids to yarn. It’s very mobile, quick and relatively simple to do. There are a few different ways to use your fingers to knit with. This is the way my girls do it (aged 6, 6, & 7).
1. Tie the end of your yarn around your thumb and weave it behind the first finger, in front of the middle, behind the ring finger and in front of the little finger. Continue round the little finger and weave back towards your thumb weaving in and out of your fingers. Do this another two times until you have 2 threads of yarn across each finger. Starting with your first finger, take the bottom thread bend your finger down and lift the thread over the top thread and over the bent finger.
2. Continue to pull the thread up and over on all the fingers creating one stitch on each.Weave the yarn back and forth again going behind the first finger, over the middle finger etc, creating another row of yarn threads on each finger. Again lift the bottom thread up and lift it over on each finger.
3. Continue to do this until you have the finger knitting half way down the back of your hand. Lift the thread off your thumb and pull down gently. This will shape the knitting into a tube. Keep knitting until you get the desired length, stopping to pull every couple of inches.
Make an assortment of lengths and colours then find a tree and hang them from its branches to make a dazzling colourful display. It creates the most wonderful haven in a garden that can be added to throughout the summer.

What a fabulous idea. I love yarn bombs but living out in the country, I’ve never seen one in real life. Never thought to yarn bomb our yard. I love it!
