Materials To Make Felt Scrap Geode Coasters

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Felt Geode Coasters

1. Preparing Your Felt

First, gather your felt scraps. You can purchase felt off-cuts, use leftover pieces from previous projects or make your own felt lengths. Whichever type you use you will need to trim and grade them into 1cm wide strips. Use a rotary cutter or sharp pair of scissors to make any necessary alterations.

2. Creating the Core

Select your first color and roll it into a small, tight roll, securing it with a small amount of glue. Trim any excess felt for future use.

3. Building Layers

Add a few more layers of different coloured felt to your first roll. Use small, spaced-out blobs of glue to secure them in place, rather than a long line of continual glue.

Building Up The Ceter Of The Felt Geode

Continue this process until your roll reaches the desired size. You can keep building out with just this piece or you can create a second smaller roll to add texture and shape. These rolls don’t need to be the same size.

4. Assembling the Coaster

Glue the two small rolls together, then carefully glue another strip of felt around both rolls. Continue adding layers and additional rolls until your coaster reaches the size you want.

Tips for Perfect Felt Geode Coasters

  • Flat Surface: Work with the coaster’s good side facing down to ensure one side remains flat.
  • Clean Edges: Use sharp scissors to trim any irregularities, such as glue overspill or uneven felt.
  • Patience: Allow the glue to set fully before handling the coaster.

This came up on Fb feed and oddly enough I made myself a pin cushion using this technique last yea.
Not as a geode, love that idea, but as a circle using narrow felt strips,
Its at work or Id take a pic and show you it.
The thing is I backed one side with a leather circle specifically so the pins and needles wouldn’t push right through it.
Its worked a treat and it might be useful for your geodes, adding stability whilst keeping the felt fully in place : )
