Helicopter Seed Christmas Tree Card (Easy Nature Craft for Kids & Adults)

November 29, 2025 By BlueBearWood Leave a Comment

Helicopter seeds (sycamore seeds in the UK) make the most beautiful natural craft materials, and in this simple Helicopter Seed Christmas Tree Card they create a gorgeous nature-themed Christmas tree. The seeds look stunning against bright red card, and their papery wings and warm natural tones add a delicate texture to the handmade design. Keep the seeds natural or add glitter for a magical Christmas sparkle, making this craft perfect for kids, teens, and adults.

What are helicopter seeds?

Helicopter seeds are those wonderful little spinning seed pods that flutter down from maple trees. In the UK, we usually call them sycamore seeds or helicopter seeds. In the US, they’re more often known as maple seeds, maple keys, whirlybirds, or samaras. Whatever the name, they’re beautifully tactile, easy to spot on the ground, and so much fun to craft with.

In the UK, helicopter seeds are an autumn treasure, falling from the trees around September and October. Most maple species in the US and Canada do the same, dropping their seeds from late summer through to autumn.

But there is one funny exception worth mentioning: the silver maple (Acer saccharinum). It drops its seeds in spring (April–May) instead of autumn. So, depending on where you live in North America, you might find helicopter seeds turning up twice a year — which is rather wonderful for crafting.

How To Make Your Helicopter Seed Christmas Tree Card

1. Plan your tree layout

Sort your helicopter seeds and lay them on the card to decide how you want your Christmas tree shape to look. Try mixing different angles for a natural layered effect.

2. Add glitter to your helicopter seeds

Next brush a thin layer of PVA glue onto one side of each seed wing and dip them gently into your glitter. Set them aside to dry.

I have pots of homemade glitter mixes and loved this one because it had some reg, green, yellow and silver that seemed to work really well with the red card. I also like to use small reusable plastic bowls to put my glitter in

3. Glue the seeds to your card

Gently flick off the excess glitter and reposition each seed on the card. Check where each seed naturally touches the card and add glue only to those points before sticking them down firmly. Now glue them in place.

4. Add fake snow

Use your paintbrush to dab small blobs of glue around the base of the tree and sprinkle on fake snow (or your DIY chopped-bag version!) and tap off any loose pieces.

5. Add a gold star

Finally, finish your handmade Christmas card by placing a gold star at the top of the tree.
