How To Make Your Own T-Shirt Yarn For Craft Projects

T-Shirt Yarn is a great crafting material and although you can buy it, it’s really easy to make your own. All you need are old t-shirts and it’s a great way to upcycle your kids old t-shirts rather than throwing them away.

Materials Required To Make DIY T-Shirts Yarn

The great thing about T-shirt yarn is it just requires two items

• Old T-Shirt
• Scissors

And depending on the project you’re making you can even use old stained t-shirts.

How To Make Your Own T-Shirt Yarn

1. Cut across the chest just under the arm and also cut of both sleeves. Cut off the hems. Turn the fabric so that the open ends of run horizontally and cut the fabric into strips but do not cut all the way through to the top. Do the same to each sleeve.

You need to leave  a couple of cm of each strip uncut.

2. This next step is important and creates the long continuous strip of yarn.  open up the fabric where you have left it uncut. You want to join the cut lengths by making diagonal cuts. Cut from the bottom outside edge diagonally to the first cut line at the top. Then cut from the bottom first cut line to the 2nd top cut line.

Keep doing this until you have cut across and joined all the cut lines diagonally

You will then be left with a continuous line of t-Shirt yarn that you can roll up into a ball.

 Long sleeved t-Shirts give even more yarn as you get more from the sleeves.

The T-shirt yarn will curl as it’s stretched but I tend to roll the balls with the yarn unstretched as it gives me more flexibility when using it.
