Rock cakes are not only delicious but also one of the best ‘first bakes’ for kids to try. They’re simple to make, require minimal ingredients, and give children a chance to get hands-on with different textures—rubbing butter into flour, mixing in dried fruit, and shaping their own little cakes. Plus, they bake quickly, making them a great way to introduce kids to the joy of baking without a long wait!
If you’re looking for another easy and fun bake for kids, these Oat Bran Muffins are a great option! They’re simple to make, full of goodness, and just as hands-on as rock cakes.

This set of photo’s were take a couple of years back. It’s still one of of the ‘Cake Makes’ my girls ask to do.

Baking Tools Required
- Aprons,

How To Make Rock Cakes
1.) Add the flour and butter (Room temperature soft) to your bowl and rub between your fingers and thumbs until it looks like breadcrumbs.

2.) Add all the other dried ingredients (sugar, raisins, mixed spice) and mix well. We’re using dried cranberries in one bowl and chocolate chips in the other in this photo.

3.) Next add you egg. I get my girls to break them into a bowl fist. Just in case there are any mishaps!

4.) Add the egg to the dry ingredients and mix together until you get a nice soft dough.

5.) Grease a baking tray. Turn you oven on to around 200°C /Gas 6 (I have to lower mine by 20°C) Break off irregular chunks of cake mix and place evenly on the tray.

6.) Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes until golden in colour (the time will depend on the size of your rock cake).
