I started creating this calming Lavender and Calendula bath soak For Sensitive Skin when one of my girls started reacting to shop-bought products and developing bad eczema around her knee and elbow joint. Unlike her sisters, who could enjoy putting shop-bought bath products, like bubble baths, without any issues, she couldn’t. So to ensure she didn’t miss out on bath-time fun, I began crafting her own ‘special‘ bath mixtures. These blends looked pretty, smelt gorgeous, and helped soothe her sore, sensitive skin and even better the whole family started to use them.
The Benefits of Making Your Beauty Products
Making your own beauty products, like this Lavender and Calendula bath soak for sensitive skin, offers numerous benefits, particularly when it comes to understanding exactly what you’re putting on your skin. By crafting your own skincare products, you have complete control over the ingredients, ensuring they are natural, high-quality, and free from harmful chemicals or artificial additives. This not only helps in avoiding potential irritants that are often found in commercial products, but also allows you to tailor the ingredients to specifically benefit your skin’s needs.

More Handmade Beauty Product Recipes
When my girls were younger I wanted them to simple natural products to protect their skin from harmful chemicals, so I spent a lot of time testing out products I could make myself. These include scrubs, lip balms, soap, bath salts, and moisturisers.

Ingredients For Lavender And Calendula Bath Soak For Sensitive Skin
- 1 cup of Epsom salts
- 1 cup of dried milk powder (full fat is ideal, but any type will work)
- Approximately 15 drops of Lavender essential oil
- A generous sprinkling of calendula petals (optional)
- Pretty storage container – Ikea is great for storage containers, as are thrift shops.
- Mixing bowl (ceramic or metal if possible)
- Metal spoon (for mixing)
- Cup measure (or any other suitable container) – cup measures can be bought easily on Amazon

The cup can be any size and could in essence be any container as long as you use 1:1 quantities of epsom salt to milk powder. For this batch I used a baking measuring cup that was 250ml in size. You can find lots of them on Amazon.
I buy most of my ingredients from The Soap Kitchen in the UK. But I have also bought products from FreshSkin and Naissence on Amazon.
Benefits Of The Bath Soak Ingredients
Epsom Salts – Rich in nourishing minerals, Epsom salts are absorbed through the skin and are excellent for relaxing muscles and relieving aches and pains.
Dried Milk Powder – Milk has been used in beauty treatments for centuries due to its nourishing and moisturizing properties, making it perfect for soothing sensitive skin. Do not include this if anyone has a dairy intolerance/allergy.
Lavender Oil – Lavender is a versatile essential oil known for its relaxing and stress-relieving properties. Additionally, it has antiseptic qualities that can help heal minor skin irritations.

Calendula Petals – While calendula petals add a decorative touch to your bath, they also offer anti-inflammatory benefits, which are particularly helpful for calming irritated skin.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Lavender and Calendula Bath Soak
- Combine the Epsom salts and dried milk powder in a mixing bowl.
- Add the Lavender essential oil and gently stir through to ensure the oil is evenly distributed.
- Incorporate the calendula petals according to your preference. Keep in mind that they may stick to your skin after bathing, but a quick rinse with a shower head will remove them.

Tips for Storage and Use
- Store the mixture in an airtight container for at least 24 hours before use. This allows the Lavender scent to permeate the entire blend, enhancing its soothing properties.

- It looks stunning stored in decorative glass jars.

- It makes a thoughtful gift for friends, family (perfect for Mother’s Day), teachers, and more.
- And, of course, you can keep it all to yourself and enjoy a little pampering!

Wow! This sounds amazing! Lavender is one of my all time favourites as its so soothing and calming. I don’t tend to have a bath very often but this definitely sounds like something that will do wonders after a hardcore day! Great post!

Hi, can’t seem to get the petals…could I use dried lavender instead? Thinking it would just add yo the scent etc… Making for a friend for a ‘relaxing’ Christmas hamper. Thanks
Hi, dried lavender would be a perfect replacement. You could also add some oats if you’re wanting it to be skin nourishing.
