Materials Needed To Make DIY Marbled Eggs
To make plasticine-marbled eggs you will need
- Plasticine (there are lots of different plasticine sets available to choose from. You can see details of them at the bottom of the page)
- Polystyrene eggs (4cm and 5cm)
- Plastic table covering
Why Use Plasticine
Plasticine is a great step up from playdoh when it comes to younger kids. But it’s also a great modelling material for all ages to learn and practice modelling skills with.
It doesn’t dry out, so it’s easy to stop and start projects without needing to pack them away. The brand used in this post is pretty soft, straight out of the packet, and only needs a little warming up to become very malleable. Which makes it perfect for kids to use in particular.

You can blend colours together to create different colours and different shades of the same colour.
It can be reused again and again. We have a container full of what we call practice plasticine. This is plasticine that is not pure in colour that we’ll use to practice modelling with for projects that we may be made in clay or Fimo for example.
How To Make Plasticine Marbled Eggs
First, select your plasticine colours. Two or Three colours work best.
If using strips line them up side by side and gently squeeze the edges together.

If using a larger block, cut off equal quantities of each colour and kneed them to make soft, before stacking them side by side.
Now using a mix of twisting, folding, squishing and rolling combine your colours.

Then roll out your plasticine so it’s between 1-2mm thick.

Wrap the rolled out plasticine around you polystyrene. You will need to tear off some pieces to get the plasticine to take shape.
When joining edges look at the colours on each edge and try and match them as best you can.

Use your fingers to gently blend the edges together.
When totally wrapped up in plasticine gently roll between your hands to smooth out the surface. You can also push indents using your fingers.
If you want to get your marbled Easter eggs to stand gently push down and wiggle the base of the egg on a plastic surface to make the bottom slightly flat.
