Simple Stylish Wool Heart Wreath Decorations (Yarn Craft Heart)

January 5, 2022 By BlueBearWood 43 Comments

I love the simplicity of these Wool Heart Wreath Decorations There’s something wonderfully wholesome and pure about them. They are suitable for most ages and look effortlessly stylish. It’s also pretty thrifty as you can recycle cardboard packaging for the template and use up wool and yarn scraps to make the hearts.

How To Make The Wool Heart Wreath

Draw out a heart shape on your card and then cut out the center leaving about 1cm heart outline. I find it easiest to fold the heart in half and cut out the middle with scissors but you could use a craft knife.

You’ll also need to make smaller wool balls. I wrap the wool around two fingers, making sure that the ball can fit through the center of the heart. It’s a bit like making a pompom but without the cutting part!

Start wrapping the wool around the heart shape.

I do the heart in two rounds. The first time around, I leave some gaps and try to get the wool sitting as neatly as possible. The second time around you can focus on filling in all the gaps and the wool is less likely to slip as it had the wool underneath to grip against.

Tie the end of the wool off in a loop and hang.

You could have fun adding some embellishments but I love the purity of the hearts with just the wool or ribbon.

Sometimes simple is best.

    Hi

I’ve just started making these. Please can somebody tell me how many times you should go around with the wool to make it nice & sturdy and also how to tie off a loop at the end.

    Thank you so much.

I only go around twice. You could go around a third time to neaten up any irregularities if you need to. To finish off I push the thread underneath and though a wrapped piece of wool to make a loop and then knot the looped piece around itself.

    Think you could
Use a sturdy card stock instead of cardboard?

Yes you could although more care would be needed as it’s more likely to ben as you’re wrapping the yarn. I would be tempted to glue a couple of card hearts together to make it more sturdy. If young kids are doing it they might end up tearing the card stock hearts just because they’re a bit more heavy handed. I use old cardboard boxes.

Not mentioned is the fact that it is not possible to work from a ball of yarn. Because it must be wrapped through the small inside space. I have to estimate the length of yarn and pull it through, This is not easy for young crafters.
